pay five silver dollars to the kohen
and this must be in the form of
cold, hard cash. One cannot offer
services, even stocks and bonds,
rather than the obligatory coins.
However, if the family is exceedingly
poor, the kohen may choose to
return the money.)
Interestingly, the pidyon haben is
held on the 31st day even if the
child, for health reasons, has yet to
have a brit.
What happens during the brief
ceremony? After receiving the token
sum, the kohen agrees to assume the
baby's duties and frees him from all
responsibilities in the Temple serv-
ice.
There are specific words the
child's father and the priest say to
confirm the exchange; the father
begins by stating, "'This, my first-
born son, is the firstborn of his
mother, and the Holy One, blessed
be He, has commanded to redeem
him, as it is said ... [followed by a
recitation of Numbers 18:16 and

Exodusl 3:2] ."

The kohen asks, "Would you
rather give me your firstborn son,
the firstborn of his mother, or
redeem him for five coins, which
you are obligated to give according
to the Torah?"
The father answers, "I desire to
redeem my son and here is the
money for his redemption, which I
am obligated to give according to
the Torah."
The kohen, who has been holding
the child, then gives the baby back
to his father and takes the coins.
This is followed by the recitation
of two blessings where the father
praises God, after which the kohen
holds the coins over the baby's head
and acknowledges the exchange. He
also wishes for the child to be
entered "into the study of the
Torah, the marriage canopy, and the
performance of good deeds." The
kohen then puts his hand on the
baby's head and says a few blessings,
and the boy is free.
Long ago, the ceremony also
included placing a medallion around
a child's neck to mark his redemp-
tion (this is rarely done today).
One new feature of pidyon haben
rituals performed in modern times
is a special coin, created by the
Bank of Israel and minted specifical-
ly for the pidyon haben observance.
And after the service? The family
and guests enjoy a delicious meal
and celebrate the day's events.
