JCCouncil Honors
Nate Shapiro

The Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit will present its
first Activist of the Year Award to Nate
Shapiro at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, May
10, at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield
Township.
Following the
theme "Creating a
Community of
Activists," Hannah
Rosenthal, the
executive director
of the national
Jewish Council for
Public Affairs
Nate Shapiro
(JCPA), will give
the keynote
address.
Council will pay
tribute to Kathleen
Straus as she com-
pletes her three-
year term as presi-
dent.
The Activist of
Hannah Rosenthal
the Year is someone
whose efforts have
helped advance Jewish interests and
build constructive relationships with our
ethnically and religiously diverse neigh-
bors. Shapiro has led efforts to build
intergroup relations through his philan-
thropic and political work in Detroit.
He has helped build closer ties to the
African American community, establish
close working relationships with public
officials, and advance public policy con-
cerns like public education.
President of Consulting Engineering
Associates Inc., Shapiro has received the
Good Guy Award from the Women's
Political Caucus (1999), Community
Service Award from the City of Detroit
Department of Human Services (1999-
2000) and the Distinguished Warrior
Award from the Detroit Urban League
(2001), among others.
A board member of the Coleman A.
Young Foundation, he is co-chairman of
the Youth Development Task Force and
a past board member of Temple Israel.
Those wishing to acknowledge
Shapiro may purchase a tribute by May
1 in his honor through the Jewish
Community Council. Tributes will be
listed in the annual meeting program.
Council's election of officers and
board of directors will take place during
the program, which will be followed by
a dessert reception. There is no charge
to attend the program.
For reservations, call Council, (248)
