From 1943-1946, he served in the United States Army, holding the rank of master sergeant during his last two years of service. He taught art in the Highland Park public schools. He then became a gallery owner, first with Middle Earth Gallery in Greektown and later of the Sheldon Ross Gallery in Birmingham. He continued as a private dealer when he lived in New York. Mr. Ross served as treasurer of the Detroit Art Dealers Association and both he and his wife were members of the Visiting Committee for European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Detroit Institute of Arts. He was a supporter of the Michigan Opera Theater, the Detroit Chamber Music Society and a member of the board of the Detroit Symphony. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughter Laurie Ross of New York; son, Robert Ross of Detroit. Bernard Edelman A man of great nobility whose life was filled with dignity, love and compassion for his fellow beings.
