Even if it should become an Arab entity, there must be the right of Jews to live there. There are Arabs who live within the boundaries of modern Israel. They have the rights of citizens. They live there in relative peace. In the same way, Jews should be able to live in Judea and Samaria. Until, through negotiations, an Arab entity is formed, the land at this point is open for settlement. No boundaries have been formally drawn. Jews have always lived in Judea and Samaria. There isn't any reason why they shouldn't continue to do so, The land is an integral part of Jew- ish history. If Jews can't live there, where can they live? Diane L. Joseph Knollen- berg's chief of staff (Paul Welday) of why the congressman did not sign the letter to the president urging a reassessment of the U.S. relationship with Palestinian Arabs ("Rethinking Palestinian Role," April 13, page 10). Those signing the letter took exception to Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat's continued use of terrorism as a form of negotia- tion. Mr. Welday stated that one of the main reasons Rep. Knollenberg, R-Bloomfield Township, did not sign the letter, despite the signatures of 189 other House members and 89 senators, was because he was a member of the foreign operations subcommittee of the House Appro- priations Committee. Somehow, this explanation does not hold much water since the Republican chair of the committee, Sonny Callahan of Alabama, did sign the letter along with three of the other five Republicans on the committee. Also of interest was the fact that the ranking Democrat on the committee, Nita Lowey of New York, also signed the letter along with one other Democrat, Steven Rothman of New Jersey. Rae Sharfman West Bloomfield Judaism Thrives On The East Side As past president of the Grosse Pointe Jewish Council, I was delighted to read your feaaire ("Making Their Pointe," March 9, page 14) on the thriving Jewish community on the east side of Detroit. When I moved to Grosse Pointe in 1958, there was only one other Jewish family in all of Grosse Pointe. In more than 40 years of living in that com- munity, neither my family nor I encountered expressions of anti-Semi- tism. As a Holocaust survivor, I was asked to speak to a number of Grosse Pointe churches. Grosse Pointe has a great deal to offer, including an active Jewish community. Dr. Emanuel Tanay Eastport Misunderstanding Of Kos Miriam In her letter ("Revisiting Roles That Women Play," April 13, page 5) in response to "Reclaiming the Voice of Women" by Rabbi Marla R. Hornsten on April 6, Fayge Young suggests that "adding a kos (cup) Miriam seems less an honor than a nonsequitor." Unfortunately, Ms. Young has mis- understood the meaning of Miriam's cup. We are commanded in Exodus to "observe" and "remember" the story of our flight from slavery to freedom. To observe these mitzvot, it is our respon- sibility to tell our children a story that includes all of the Israelites. The Miriam's cup tradition was cre- ated as a deliberate reminder that women were a vital part of the Passover story, using the prophet Miri- am to represent them. It was never intended as a substitute for, or an addition to, the four ceremonial cups of wine used to symbolize God's promises of redemption to the Israelites. Remembering the women of Exo- dus has never been intended to exclude or denigrate the role of Moses and the other Israelite men. Remem- bering women at a seder table or in a Haggadah should not be threatening; it should be uplifting as all of us con- tinue to explore and practice the mitzvot. Nancy Gad-Harf West Bloomfield
