Long-Term Effect
My view is the program is even more
important in view of the present con-
flict in the Middle East," said David
Gad-Harf, executive director of the
Jewish Community Council and an
early Seeds of Peace supporter. "It may
take a decade or two to have its full
effect, when these kids are in a posi-
tion of power in their countries."
Joel Jacob of West Bloomfield and
Tim Attalla of Northville, members
of the Seeds of Peace national board,
also have been involved in the proj-
ect from its very earliest days. "It's
hard to believe how young they are
and how well they express them-
selves," Jacob said.

Attalla said Liron and Kamal "say
things that might disturb a Palestinian
or a Jewish listener, but you go away
thinking 'These kids are right.'"
For the next few years, Kamal will
continue his education at Southern
Maine University, not far from the
Seeds of Peace International Camp.
According to Israeli law, Liron must
serve in the military for three years. "I
know now I'll go in as a commanding
officer," he said. "It is not an easy thing
to be a fighter. But we do have our pride.
"I hope to make sure the soldiers
under me will be able to use force
when necessary; and to show restraint
when they can." ❑
