better and started to drive a car again, I
promised myself I would spend as much
time as I could doing worthwhile things
for other people. I now fill my time in
ways that are useful to others."
Shiovitz feels he is "no one special"
just because he reads to hospice patients,
or wipes some Jello off of their chin, or
just sits quietly with them so they'll
know someone is there. "The difference
between the volunteers and others is
that we just show up and do it," he said.
Michelle Greenstein of Wixom,
program director for JFS's Volunteer
Services, said Shiovitz has made a
"huge impact" on the organization's
volunteer program.
"After working with Beaumont's
Hospice program, he realized the need
for this type of thing for the Jewish com-
munity, so he got it going," she said. "He
even wrote a 150-page manual to train
volunteers for the program. He's very
persistent, and he has a great way with
people...very calm and soothing. He's the
perfect person to work with hospice
and to get this award." ❑
