Reform Synagogues To Gather
On Shabbat At Shir Tikvah
Troy's Congregation -Shir
Tikvah will host Detroit
Jewry's Reform congregations
in a joint service, the Isaac
Meyer Wise Shabbat, on
Friday night, April 13, during
the eight days of Passover.
Rabbi Wise (1819-1900)
was born in Bohemia. He emi-
grated to the U.S. in 1846 and
became rabbi of Congregation
Beth El in Albany, where he began to
change the Orthodox form of service.
In 1854, he moved to Bene Yeshurun,
an Orthodox congregation, in
Cincinnati, where he over time trans-
formed it into a Reform temple.
He founded the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations in 1873. Two
years later, he founded the Hebrew
Union College. He organized the
Central Conference of American
Rabbis in 1889.
"As the founder of Reform
Judaism," said Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg
of Shir Tikvah," Rabbi Isaac
Mayer Wise inspired the partici-
pation of thousands in a form
of Judaism that empowered the
individual Jew to forge a
Judaism of meaning. The vision
of Isaac Mayer Wise has proven
to be of enduring value of near-
ly 200 years."
This year's Wise service,
open to the public, will be
held at 7:45 p.m. April 13 at
Congregation Shir Tikvah, 3900,
Northfield Parkway, Troy. The service
will feature an ensemble comprised of
Shir Tikvah members: Art Bayer and
Brian Granader on drums, Joel Stern
on flute, Edna Garte on mandolin,
Noemi Schaffa on cello, Gary Rimar
on piano and Lisa Soble-Siegman and
Josh Cohen on guitar.
After the service, there will be an
Oneg Shabbat. For information, call
