While earning a master's degree at
Columbia University in New York,
he served in the United States
Army's millitary Counta-Intellegence
Corps from 1943-46.
Schumer has a deep interest in
Hebrew and Israel, from the time he
was a student in Detroit's United
Hebrew Schools (UHS) and as presi-
dent of the Labor Zionist Student
Organization at the University of
Michigan.
He has served on the boards of
UHS, the Jewish Social Service
Board, Friends of Hebrew University
and the Labor Zionist Institute, and
as chairman of Branch 10 of the
Labor Zionist Institute.
He was chairman of the Oak Park
Citizens Advisory Committee in
1963 and a member of the Oak Park
Board of Education from 1964-68.
He is a past chairman of the linen
conservation committee of the
Textile Rental Services Association.
Mrs. Schumer is a homemaker
and helps administer General Linen
and Uniform Service. The Schumers
are the parents of Dr. David
Schumer of Enumclaw, Calif.,
Deborah Tuchman of Alpine, N.J.,
and Sharon Schwartz of Bloomfield
Hills. They have 11 grandchildren.
