10 Mile and
Greenfield, had
Dave's Delicatessen
on Hastings Street,
where Dave Raben's
father delivered
bread to him ... with
little Dave on his
dad's bread truck.
In the 1960s, while working as a
counterman for Dave at Dinty Moore,
Ronnie Share quit when Harry Weiss,
at Esquire Delicatessen on Dexter and
Leslie, offered him a better opportunity
... "If you work for me a couple of
years, I'll sell you the place," said Harry.
He kept his word ... and Ron
bought Esquire ... It was six weeks
later that the infamous riots of 1967
came ... After being burned out, he
reopened four months later to do
more business than Esquire
Delicatessen had ever done ... open 24
hours daily, seven days a week.
Ronnie and Dave recalled those for-
mer days at Dinty Moore ... when, in
1975, Dave bought Esquire Delicatessen
from his former counterman.
Legendary delicatessen figures
worked for Dave, also ... Harry Boesky
and Joe Mosten ... both at his
Bloomfield Deli on Telegraph and
Maple ... Dave Goldstein, former
counterman for Sam Lerman at Ben
& George's in. Livonia and Gateway
Deli on 11 Mile, was with Dave on
Seven Mile ... Sam Green was a coun-
terman for him ar Fredson's on Dexter
and Wyoming ... and toiled side by
side with Dave in the '50s at Modern
on Fenkell ... Sol Pitt and Dave were
together at Best Dairy Deli on
Livernois.
Ron Forman worked for Dave in the
early '60s at the Dinty Moore on W
Seven Mile as a dishwasher ... and was
then trained as a counterman by Dave
and his partner, Earle Mostyn ... Ron
went on to become a highly-respected
delicatessen man ... as partner with
Earle at Advance Delicatessen in the
Advance Building in Southfield ... and
then the Nosherie on Lincoln in Oak
Park ... before Ron took over himself at
the present Bread Basket in Oak Park.
Today, Rochelle Raben, Dave's
daughter, is a fine and highly efficient
waitress at Ron's Bread Basket Deli ...
Her husband, Tony Brooks, is a coun-
terperson there ... and among Ronnie's
right-hand men.
One of Dave's favorite stories took
place at his Dint), Moore Delicatessen
on Seven Mile ... and was a hit by the
late raconteur Myron Cohen ... About
the lady coming in for some corned
beef ... "How much do you want?" she
