hen vou pull out that
stack of well-worn and
slightly wine-stained
Haggadot, you are ready
for another Passover. Nothing will ever
replace those Haggadot and their spe-
cial memories._
But if you take a trip down the
Jewish Highway, you will find many
stimulating and provocative online
Haggadot that could give you new
insights and make you shine at this
year's seders.
Most of the Haggadot below are in
English, some with Hebrew sections.
None require Hebrew fonts. Please be
aware that many of these Haggadot
contain God's name and should be
treated accordingly.
If you are looking for traditional
Haggadot, I recommend Laurance
Wieder's Red Sea Haggadah
members.aol.com/wiseacrebk/
wiederlhag.html and the Chabad
Haggadah www.passover.net , which
offers a straight translation of the
Haggadah in addition to a companion
commentary.
For insight into how the seder has
been observed in Sephardic homes,
take a look at Sephardi Connection
www.sephardiconnect.com/pesah/
haggadah.htm. For example, among
North African Sephardim, after Mah.
Nishtanah is recited, the seder leader
would leave the room and come back
with a walking stick and the afikomen
(special matzah needed to end the seder)
in a cloth on his shoulder. The children
would ask: "Where are you coming
from?" And he would proceed to tell the
story of his exodus from Egypt.
Once you have chosen your
Haggadah, you may want to attend a
seder to get into the hang of things.
On Friday, April 7, you are invited
join a love CyberSeder www.emanuel-
nyc.org/seder/seder.html.

Congregation Emanu-El in New
York will broadcast its seder over the
Web starting at noon Eastern time. You
can follow along while looking at the
stunning images from ancient Haggadot
on the Congregation Emanu-El site
w ww.emanuelnyc.org/seder/table.html.
There are a few Web sites where you
take a look at pages from some stunning
ancient Haggadot. The beautiful Sasoon
Spanish Haggadah dates back to before
the expulsion of Jews from Spain in
1492 and is written on parchment
www.imj.org.il/judaicalsasoon.htm.
Yale University Library has put
together a beautiful online exhibit of
ancient and modern Haggadot includ-
ing the 13th century Birds Head

Haggadah

www.library.yale.edu/judaica/exhibits/
hag-gadah/. Most of the human figures
have been replaced with birds' heads,
probably to comply with the biblical
prohibition against depicting graven
images.
One more of them deserves men-
tion. It's not illuminated. And it does-
n't have a remarkable commentary.
But many people reserve fond memo-
ries for the Maxwell House Passover
Haggadah. According to
KosherTodavOnline, Maxwell House
(now part of Kraft Foods) has distrib-
uted 35 million copies of its blue and
white Haggadah since the 1930s.
A very interesting article on the
Temple Reyim of Newton, Mass.,
Web site says we owe a great deal to
the Maxwell House Haggadah

www.reyim.org/bulletin/2000/
april.shtml. "As a product of the Great
Depression, it reminds us of some of
the hardships vve faced as an American
Jewish community struggling to sur-
vive difficult economic times. If it
were not for the generosity of Maxwell
House, many families during the '30s
and '40s would not have had
Haggadot. This classic should be part
of every synagogue library.
A Haggadah that's good to the last
song.
