Teens =lead Tollead One haircut makes two kids more beautiful. SHELLI LIEBMAN DORFN4AN Staff Writer hen Miriam Liebman walked into Antonino's Salon in Walled Lake, she \vasn't there just to get a new hair style for herself, but to help another child have one as well. She could have gradually trimmed a little at a time from her near-waist-length mane to eliminate the shock of a final, shorter haircut. But then Miriam wouldn't have had the required 10-inches-or-more of hair to become a donor – — to Locks of Love, a charity providing hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children with medical hair loss. The 12-inch ponytail stylist Chrissy N1cDuffy snipped off was sent to the Palm Springs, Fla., organiza- tion, where it will be woven with the hair of other donors to make a wig for another child. Although Locks of Love accepts hair from adults, too, Miriam, a 14-year-old ninth-grader at the Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit, is among the 80 percent of Locks of Love donors who are children. Since it vas formed in 1997, the non-profit group has provided hairpieces to approximately 200 children, with each wig hand-assembled by volunteers. Each takes four months to make. Miriam, it turned out, was not the only generous one in the shop that afternoon. Miriam's mother Judy said when she got ready to pay, McDuffy said to her, 'Miriam is donating the hair, I'll donate the haircut.'" ❑ Students Have 'A Capitol Time The Michigan Jewish Conference presented "A Capitol Time" in Lansing on March 6, a youth advocacy day in cooperation wit the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit, American Jewish Committee, Michigan Region and the Anti-Defamation League, Michigan Region.
