Shana Kaplow: "Such Love Exists,"
video still, © 2001. "The video is
almost an abstraction, and the knotted
string could be a vein, umbilical cord
or tendon," says Kaplow.
For the DAM exhibit, Kaplow sub-
mitted a video projection, which is
shown on the wall of a small room and
features hands tying and untying a black
wire. It has a sound track with cello
music to evoke a meditative quality.
The shapes and image keep chang-
ing in Such Love Exists," says Kaplow,
38, who also went to grad school with
the curator. "The video is almost an
abstraction, and the knotted string
could be a vein, umbilical cord or ten-
don. The images are based on photos
in a medical journal."
Primarily a painter dealing with the
body, Kaplow wants to explore how
bodies perceive experiences — the exter-
nal body versus the internal body and
the difference between inhabiting the
body and studying the body ,. She started
working with video four years ago after
experimenting with photography to cre-
ate source material for paintings.
"I wanted to see how I could push
ideas in different ways," says Kaplow, a
Minnesota artist and teacher whose
work has been enlarged and shown in
billboard space outside the DAM. "I
primarily work with very large figura-
tive abstractions and often suggest the
body as a transparent container."
Other artists represented in the
show include sculptors Brian Lehto
and Ed Sykes of Detroit, drawing
devotee Thomas Rieck of Germany,
photographer Eric Rippert of
Cleveland and mixed media designer
Mona Shahid of Toronto. El
