has seen the manager's job from all sides.
"We are the CEO of our congrega-
tions," Tisdale says. "It's our job to
make things happen 24/7."
Tisdale calls Alan Yost "a living leg:
end in Detroit. He does a tremendous
job at the synagogue itself, and he also
runs the [Adat Shalom] cemetery."
How many hours Yost works
depends on the week, says wife
Beverly, community liaison with the
Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit. But it's always
well over 40 hours.
"He goes to services every Shabbat,
and is there almost every Sunday
morning," she says. "All that varies is
the night meetings.
"The busy season is right before the
High Holidays. We call it his 'tax sea-
son,' as if he were an accountant."
Yost also is a star home-run hitter
on the Adat Shalom softball team.
In addition to Yost and his wife, the
family includes sons Robert, a second-
year medical student at Wayne State
University, and Zachary, a ninth-grad-
er at North Farmington High School.
Yost also turns out to be distantly
related to Adat Shalom Rabbi Herbert
Yoskowitz.
"Our families originally came from
the same town in Poland," Yost
explains. "I believe my father changed
our name from Yoskowitz right after the
war [World War II]. We looked at an
old photo of a relative of his and the
resemblance to my father was uncanny."
Rabbi Yoskowitz says Yost has
"instituted a sense of team and family
at Adat Shalom.
"When I need to share ideas with a
non-clergy colleague, Alan is the first
person I go to."
Rabbi Nevins adds, "Alan Yost
thinks about the Jewish people in
general — Klal Yisrael. He's active in
the Jewish Community Center, the
Jewish Community Council and
much more. We're not an island here
in Farmington Hills."
One of Yost's proudest moments for
Klal Yisrael came in 1983, when he
and his wife traveled to the then-
Soviet Union to bring aid to refus-
niks, Jews who were persecuted
because of their desire to emigrate.
Yost takes pride in the friendships he
has made in his 20 years at Adat Shalom.
"We have made this synagogue our
extended family," he says.
"I've had the pleasure of working
with 11 presidents, and I have only
nice things to say about them. They
are generous with their time, with
themselves and with their pocket-
books — all the things that count." Li
