BEAIONG GLASS BARRIERS from page 67 Frolic's mother, Jeanette Nestel, a late-starting bronze artist, served as a role model for her daughter, who had her first show when she was 40. Frolic was a teacher trained in English literature. Then, "I took a course and got glass fever," says the artist, who ultimately got a degree at the Ontario College of Art. Through the Glass Arts Society, Frolic connected with a New York gallery, Leo Kaplan Modern, and exhibited there. That show led to many others, with interest in her work spreading to Europe, particularly Germany and France. "I try to travel to all the galleries, go to the openings and reach," Frolic says. "I tell students that life is long and they have time to work on their art." Weinberg's pieces continue a series he started a few years ago, but the expres- siveness is different in some ways. The newer pieces are explained in depth in the current issue of Glass magazine. "I wasn't sure how far I would take this series, but it's surprised me," Weinberg says. "These works have so much to do with my life in Rhode Island... Describing his environment as a salt marsh turning into a mud flat at low tide," Weinberg creates his buoy forms from discarded ones that wash up on the beach, coating the exteriors with metal and glass fused together. He incorporates the idea that these • GALLERY XVM, 18 N. Saginaw, Pontiac; (248) 745-8875. "The newer forms are more raw and have an earthy feel," he says of the evolution of the series. The boat forms, which come from cross sections of hulls, are laden with col- ors that relate more to earlier work. He also has added precious metals as he fin- ishes new expressions of the boat theme. Weinberg was studying ceramics at Alfred University in New York in 1973 when he was introduced to glass by a teacher and became fascinated with it. He went on to get a master's degree at the Rhode Island School of Design and is represented at many prestigious museums, including the Detroit Institute of Arts. Weinberg also has done Judaica, mostly menorot. "Glass is the most common material at the same time that it's the most exotic," he says.
