The institute makes a statement,"
says Brandeis librarian Bessie Hahn.
"People can no longer ignore the
importance of women and Jewish his-
tory." Now, in one building, women
learn the importance of networking
and peer support.
Also important, Hahn says, is how
Reinharz spearheaded a different
approach to doing research on
women's issues.
"You need primary material on
women [not yet researched], like
interviews, personal files, diaries,
journals and archives."
Now organizations from all over are
bringing their materials to the institute
to establish a very important contem-
porary Jewish women's archive.

Time Of Transition

This summer, Reinharz will step
down as director of the Brandeis
Women's Studies Program, but will
continue to direct the HIRIJW and
the Women's Studies Research Center.
"This is a period of transition,"
Reinharz says. "Many women my age
have to deal with this. Suddenly, the
natural progression of what comes
next is not clear.
"When we [women] get a sense of
empowerment, we're not sure ulti-
mately where to go with it. I'll be the
first to admit that I have achieved my
dreams in the creation of this build-
ing. And I don't know what my next
step is."
It's not for lack of offers. Reinharz
has been approached to do all sorts of
"amazing things."
"I'm thinking about it," she says.
"It may mean digging into this new
research center. Who knows? I've got-
ten used to challenges and the excite-
ment that comes from having a grand
vision."
