Trade Conference Boosts Israel
The talk was trade with Israel as some 15
local business leaders met at Wayne State
University's Farmington Hills campus for
a videoconference with the United States
Embassy in Tel Aviv on March 21.
Joined by video with similar-minded
businessmen and women from
Cleveland and Des Moines, Iowa,
attendees listened to pitches by
embassy staff and leaders of American
companies doing business in Israel.
More than $17 billion was done in
bilateral trade last year, and 1,000 U.S.
companies already operate in Israel,
said Deborah Schwartz, economic
counselor for the U.S. Embassy.
• bar & bat mitzvahs
• showers
• all special occasions.
The conference was set up, in parr,
to open up the Israeli market for U.S.
goods and services, and to create even
more opportunity for American corn-
panies to do business in Israel.
Israel bragged of a stable currency, no
inflation and gross national product
growth of 6 percent last year, even
though the economy decreased in the
last quarter because of Palestinian vio-
lence and the American economy,
Schwartz said. She added that any fur-
ther decreases will more likely be relat-
ed to the Dow Jones or the NASDAQ
stock prices, rather than the violence.

JCC Renews Summer Bus Leases
On March 9, the West Bloomfield
Board of Education agreed on a two-
year renewal of the district's summer
bus lease agreement with the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit.
The 35 buses will be used for sum-
mer camp programs at the West
Bloomfield JCC. The contract calls for
a cost to the JCC of 569,810 for sum-
mer 2001, and 573,880 for 2002.
Although drivers' salaries are not
included in this amount, the JCC
hires mainly West Bloomfield Public
