Ze'ev (Vladimir) Jabotinsky, the gray
eminence of "right-wing" Zionism
and the ideological patron of Israel's
Likud, has left a legacy from which
Israeli prime ministers Menachem
Begin and Binyamin Netanyahu have
drawn their political orientation.
It is more than likely that Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon, Likud's top
leader, will also refer to Jabotinsky's
Zionist principles as he seeks to grap-
ple with the pressing problems facing
Israel today ("Mixing The Elements,"
March 9, page 22).
In a highly significant article pub-
lished in 1923, titled the "Iron Wall,"
Jabotinsky incisively debunked the
notion attributed to him that he
favored, even advocated, the physical
removal of the Palestinian Arabs from
Palestine. "I find their removal from
the country — in whatever form —
as out of the question," he wrote.
He maintained, however, that "our
work in Palestine cannot be halted to
satisfy the whims and wishes of the
native population. We must continue
to make progress by resorting, if need
be, to physical force and an 'iron wall'
that the native population will be
powerless to demolish."
Jabotinsky held that the sterile argu-
ment that his approach is immoral is
without substance. "We have already
resolved that Zionism is both 'moral'
and 'just' — no other morality has
ever been invented. This does not
mean that any agreement with the
Arabs is out of the question. My posi-
tion is that a free will, mutually accept-
able peace accord is not possible at this
time."
This seems to be the position taken
by Sharon, who, in his election and
post-election statement, indicated that
he ruled out comprehensive, long range
and final solutions with the Palestinians
at this time. Instead; the thrust of his
negotiating strategy will be focused on
reaching "interim agreements," leaving
such crucial questions as Jerusalem, the
holy places and refugee-return for con-
sideration at a future time.
The latest version of the intifada,
which has the tacit approval of Yasser
Arafat and the Palestinian Authority,
speaks volumes for the adoption by
Israel of the strategy of the "Iron
Wall" that no Arab counterforce is
capable of destroying.
