As I Heard It

A

phorisms, words to the wise, old sayings
they all have something to say. Why don't
we try a bit harder.to understand what is
being said so that when we say these things,
we say them correctly.
Top on my list of misquoted quotes is, "You can't
have your cake and eat it, too." Why not When said
that way it states that you can't
have something and use it; and
I reiterate, Why not?
The expression, correctly
worded, is "You can't eat your
cake and have it, too." That
means that you can't have some-
thing, use it and still maintain
it. Or, you can't have it both
ways.
The next one is a corruption
of
a biblical quote. The way it is
SY MANELLO
frequently
heard is, "Money is
Editorial Assistant
the root of all evil."
The correct version is, The
love of money is the root of all evil." Note: It is not
the item itself, but our greed for it that is the cause of
woes. That makes a bit more sense when it comes to
laying blame.
Of course, there is always the ability to change a say-
ing to suit one's own needs.
For example: Let a smile be your umbrella if you
want a mouthful of rain.
Or: Early to bed and early to rise is a dull routine.
Or: A bird in the hand can be rather messy.
Whatever you do, try to avoid mixing your sayings;
the result can be embarrassing at the least.
Pay no mind to: Don't cross your bridges if you
burned them behind you. Or: Every cloud comes
before a storm.
Let me leave you with these words of "wisdom": God
helps those who help themselves, but God help those
who are caught helping themselves. D
