You Go, Girlee!

A unique Detroit collective of women artists
embarks on its fourth exhibition.

T

hey were not too afraid to
confront provocative and
inspiring femininity in per-
son. In fact, they ogled
womb-like sculpture, bare breasts and
visual statements of womanhood.
An eclectic mix of art enthusiasts
jammed the Maniscalco Gallery in
Detroit recently for the opening recep-
tion of "Herstory," an exhibition of
the Girlee Detroit Collective.
The two-year-old Girlee Collective
is a group of women dedicated to cre-
ating and sustaining a network for
female artists, activists and performers.
They produce art events, organize
community outreach and build sup-
port for one another.
One of the Jewish participants,
Detroit glass artist and Berkley High
School graduate Terry Rodriguez, is a
Girlee Detroit board member. She is
exhibiting Alma 1, 2, 3, a trio of three-
dimensional glass and neon sculptures.
She has sculpted bent and fused glass
and neon for the past 12 years.
By day, Rodriguez works as a distri-
bution manager for Jeff Daniels' film
company.
Hannah Fishman's "Dinner Series" is

a representation of her digital transfer
photography on wood. The third-year
Center for Creative Studies student,
majoring in graphic design, showed an
additional digital photograph that
"contrasts flesh and wood and illus-
trates the coexistence of hard and soft."
"It's all done through the computer,"
says the West Bloomfield resident.
"The Girlee theme will be carried out
through the month of April," says
gallery owner Robert Maniscalco. On
Saturday, March 31, a Girlee Salon fea-
tures performers, poets, singers and
dancers. The festival culminates on April
27 with a closing night party, complete
with a variety of entertainment, ranging
from "the exotic to the raw."
"It's neat to see a women's movement
attempting to define itself," says Maniscalco.
"I'm proud to be a part of it." ❑
