Writing On
The Wall

ICC officials
doubt anti-Semitism
was a factor.

ome time on Saturday, March 17,
vandals defaced the exterior north
wall of the Jewish Community Center
in Oak Park. Anti-Semitism did not
appear to be involved in the graffiti,
JCC officials say.
"We believe it's a minor incident,
probably some local teenagers playing
with spray cans," said David Sorkin,
JCC executive director. "When police
look at this kind of stuff, they look at
intent. If [the vandals] had wanted to
do something anti-Semitic or foul,
they would have done it. It isn't hard
to make a swastika."
The spray-painted words and sym-
bols were on the wall of the JCC that
faces Charlotte Rothstein Park. They
include parts of names and words in
"bubble" letters, along with drawings
of arrows, circles and the like.
Building director Leslee Magidson
said this was the first such incident in
her eight years at the JCC's Jimmy
Prentis Building.
"It must have happened Saturday
night," Magidson said. "It wasn't here
when I left Friday, and it was here
when the staff opened on Sunday.
"If it had happened on Saturday dur-
ing the day, there are so many people
walking around here on Shabbat, we
assume somebody would have seen it."
Oak Park Police Sgt. Chris
Martinelli said the department has not
investigated the incident so far.
However, he said police have received
complaints in past years of young peo-
ple congregating in Rothstein Park.
The JCC has updated its security
system at the Oak Park center. The
new system includes cameras, which
scan the building's interior as well as
the parking lot on the east, the secure
door on the south side facing 10 Mile
Road and the playground on the west.
Still to come is better parking lot
lighting.
Sorkin said the JCC isn't planning
any additional improvements in
response to the incident.
At the West Bloomfield JCC, ongo-
ing renovations include improved
security, he said.
