T
wo local rabbis are among near-
ly 100 American rabbis who
signed an open letter to President
George W. Bush and Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon expressing their oppo-
sition to exclusive Israeli sovereignty
over all of Jerusalem.
Rabbis Michael Moskowitz of
Temple Shir Shalom and Richard
Weiss of Farmington Hills, who
headed the former Temple Beth
Jacob in Pontiac, were among sign-
ers of the letter drafted by the
Jewish Peace Lobby in Silver Spring,
Md.
"I can't believe other rabbis didn't
sign it," said Rabbi Weiss, now a
marriage and family counselor. "I
had no hesitation. I think ultimately
peace is the only answer for the safe
survival of Israel. This would be an
intelligent way of handling it."
In the letter, the rabbis called
upon Sharon to refrain from any
expansion of Jewish neighborhoods
in east Jerusalem and they called on
Bush "to vigorously express
American opposition to any such
unilateral steps.
"It is important to understand
that Ariel Sharon is a man of
action," said Jerome Segal, Jewish
Peace Lobby president. "He intends
to create facts on the ground that
will prevent any future Labor gov-
ernment from making the kind of
compromises Barak offered on
Jerusalem. If he succeeds, then real
peace will be impossible."
Correction
The Living Well article, "Ask Amy
- The community expands out-
reach to young adults" (March 16,
page 87), incorrectly identified the
target population. The age group is
17-30. In addition, Amy
Rosenblum, a clinical social worker
at Jewish Family Service, was
recently named JFS coordinator for
outreach services for young adults.
