She also has spoken to college students planning to become
teachers. When Danny was 3, she also became involved with
the JARC (Jewish Association for Residential Care), now
based in Farmington Hills, a provider of programs and servic-
es for people with disabilities and their families.
"I wanted to make sure Danny would have all the
resources when he gets older, too, she says.
Friedman says her family always has been there for her.
"God blessed me with a wonderful family," she says. "When
Danny was little, my mom shlepped with me a lot. She was
my right hand."
For Danny, Friday nights are for family. "I usually have
Shabbos dinner at my house for 14 to 20 people,"
Friedman says of her extended family.
"I wanted Danny involved with his family. His greatest time
is with the family. He loves his grandma and grandpa," she
says of her parents, Pearl and Erno Friedman of Southfield.
"His sister Nina was a big influence on him. She is his hero."
Sisterly Love
"Danny is awesome," says Nina, a junior at Michigan State
University. "He's such an honest person. He has an innocence
about him. He doesn't know from wrong. A lot of people could
learn from Danny and other kids with Down syndrome."
"I don't think it ever really fully hit me that he has Down
syndrome," she says. "I don't ever treat him like he has a
disability. I'm just his older, bully sister."
And Danny reciprocates. "Whenever I have boys over, he
teases me and says, 'Nina has a boyfriend. Nina has a
boyfriend.' Little brother things. All my friends like Danny.
He hugs them. They're his friends, too."
And Danny is a big MSU sports fan. "When he comes to
visit, he wears his Michigan State clothes. On big game
days, he wears his Michigan State shirt and watches the
games on TV and cheers, 'Yea, State!' In Danny's bar mitz-
vah announcement picture, in this week's Jewish News, he is
wearing an MSU shirt and baseball cap.
Nina shares Danny's love of music. She has taken him to
plays, buying the music on CDs to listen to first. "I love music
and dancing and performing and that brought us closer togeth-
er," Nina says.
