A Mitzvah Project

think about what to do
for my mitzvah project
for my bar mitzvah, I
wanted
to blow it off by doing
almost

I learned that the children living in
the shelter were not even allowed to
own their own books, and that made
me feel awful. So, I decided to have a
book drive.
I called a bunch of my friends and

little things that didn't really mean
much and would just complete the
13-hour requirement.
But I realized that I really should try
to do something that would be more
meaningful and close to my heart.
I have always had a love of litera-
ture. Even though I -am a regular TV
watching/video game playing kid, I
read a lot. I like stories, particularly
science fiction and fantasy, that really
take hold of my imagination.
Therefore, it made sense to try to do
something that would help the cause
of literacy and children.
A family friend told me about a
school in Highland Park that had a

our family friends and asked them to
donate as many books as possible for
kids in kindergarten through fifth
grade. With the help of my dad, we
drove around and picked them up and
loaded them into my mom's SUV.
The following week, my mom and I
drove down to Cortland Academy and
delivered the books. We had collected
more than 250 books for children age
5-12.
At the school, I read a book to each
of the first-grade classrooms. The chil-
dren were adorable and had many
questions for me, such as: "What's
your favorite book?" "Can spiders play
baseball?"
I really enjoyed my visit there; if our
two schools had different school hours
I would love to do it again. I also plan
to donate some of my bar mitzvah
money to the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit's
Council for Literacy. ❑
