According to tradition, it was on this
day that the Jews placed the blood on
their doorposts as a sign for the Angel of
Death to pass over their homes.

#4) Despite popular misconception,
chametz is not wheat, oats, barley, spelt
and rye, but rather what these create —
a leavened product — when they are
mixed with water for more than 18 min-
utes.

#5) The theme of Pesach is cited in the
Ten Commandments (remember, "I am
the Lord your God Who took you out
of the land of Egypt from the house of
bondage.")

#6) The night before the holiday begins
is called leil shimmurium, or night of
guardian, because, according to the
ancient Jewish scholar Rashi, God had
long anticipated this evening as the
beginning of the Jews' liberation from
Egypt.

#7) Why is it that some Jews eat peas
and corn on Pesach and some do not?
Many years ago, leading Ashkenazi rab-
bis ruled that rice and beans, corn,
peanuts and peas could be used to make
flour, which would closely
resemble chametz. This, they
declared, could be confusing to
some people — and so these
particular vegetables and
legumes, known as kitniyot, are
not consumed in Ashkenazi
homes. Sephardic rabbis, on the
other hand, had no problem
with the food items, so
Sephardi families regularly enjoy
everything from peanut butter
to corn salad on Pesach.

#9) Before you buy, check that "P." A
capital "P" alongside a heksher does not
necessarily mean that an item is kosher
for Pesach. In fact, this "P" might
instead be describing the item as pareve,
neither meat nor milk. Make certain
that the item also is clearly marked "P-
Passover" or "P-Pesach."

#10) While Jews are always obligated to
give charity, Pesach has a special charity
of its own called maot chittim, or
money for wheat." This fund, to which
one should give in addition to (not in
place of) donations to tzedakah, helps
families who otherwise would not be
able to provide for all the items neces-
sary for a seder. Money is used to aid
Jews in the local community and
abroad. Most synagogues hold a maot
chittim drive; check with your rabbi for
more information.

matzah balls with his chicken soup. The
issue is gebruck, and it refers to any
matzah product cooked with water.
According to some rabbinic sources,
gebruck foods are not permitted (specifi-
cally during the seders) because when
the matzah mixes with water it could
accidentally become chametz.
