American Jewry
Supports Israel

New York/JTA — A new poll indi-
cates that Americans resoundingly
side with Israel in its ongoing struggle
with the Palestinians, contradicting
the perception of many Jewish leaders
that the Palestinians are winning "the
P.R. war."
Among the results of its 1,400
interviews, the poll found that one-
third of American Jews believe
Jerusalem should be divided as part of
a peace deal with the Palestinians, a
view shared by one-half of non-Jews.
The poll was commissioned by the
Conference of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organizations, the
American Jewish Committee, the
United Jewish Communities and the
Anti-Defamation League.

Powell Affirms
Israel Policy

Washington/JTA— Secretary of State
Colin Powell told Arab American
leaders that his reference to Jerusalem
as Israel's capital in Congressional tes-
timony last week did not indicate a
change in U.S. policy.
During his first official meeting with
Arab Americans on Tuesday, Powell
clarified that Jerusalem's status is a mat-
ter to be determined by Israel and the
Palestinians. Powell also discussed U.S.
sanctions on Iraq, treatment of Arab
Americans in Israel and Israeli policy in
the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Deaf Receive
Haggadah Aid

New York/JTA — The Orthodox
Union is mailing a sign-language sup-
plement to the Passover Haggadah to
thousands of deaf and hearing-
impaired Jews worldwide.
The supplement, published by the
O.U.'s Our Way outreach program,
features descriptions of basic Passover
laws and customs. It is the third in
the group's series of sign-language
guides for Jewish holidays.

B'nai B'rith Blasts
U.N.-Funded Map

New York/JTA — B'nai B'rith
International blasted a U.N. program
for funding publication of a map that

does not show the State of Israel.
Another map, published by the
Palestinian Ministry of Tourism with
the support of the U.N.'s Program of
Assistance to the Palestinian People,
details the Old City of Jerusalem,
showing churches and mosques, but
making no mention of synagogues or
the Western Wall.
"It is unconscionable that the U.N.
should fund a map — or any other
publication — that ignores Israel or
any other member state," said the
president of B'nai B'rith International,
Richard Heideman.

Diary Tells More
About Anne Frank

New York/JTA — A new edition of
Anne Frank's diary was released, three
years after a close friend of the
teenage diarist's father disclosed the
existence of five secret pages that Otto
Frank had entrusted to him years ear-
lier.
In those pages, Anne portrays her
mother, Edith, as having "cold eyes,"
and agonizes that she cannot talk to
her, which perhaps explains why Anne
began writing a diary. Anne also
lamented that her parents were not in
love, and that their marriage was a
union of convenience.

Boy Dies In
Purim Tragedy

New York/JTA — A 2-year-old
Chasidic boy was accidentally run
over by a school bus and killed soon
after the child's mother gave the driv-
er a Purim gift basket.
The March 7 accident occurred in
the predominantly Chasidic neighbor-
hood of Borough Park in Brooklyn.
Police said no charges would be filed
against the driver, who is also Chasidic.

New York/JTA — Several New York
Jewish philanthropists and organizations
plan to run a funeral home they recent-
ly purchased on Manhattan's Upper •
West Side as a nonprofit venture.

which received a start-up grant from
UJA-Federation of Greater New York,
will be one of the only Jewish commu-
nity-run funeral homes in the United
States.
