He studied law, philosophy and fine arts at the University of Melbourne, and wrote and performed songs and sketches in university revues. The son of an architect, Humphries grew up in Camberwell, a Melbourne suburb, on a subdivided golf course that his father had helped to build. In 1956, he joined a group called the Philip Street Revue Theatre and first created the character of Edna Everage, a Melbourne housewife, who became internationally celebrated and evolved into the popular Dame Edna. He also appeared in several other productions, including Waiting for Godot. Bored by Australia — "the land where nothing happens," he says — Humphries went to London in 1959 and later was joined by more Australians — a mixture of artists, performers, writers and filmmakers. He appeared in several London West End shows, his most notable roles being Fagin in Oliver (songwriter Phil Collins played the Artful Dodger) and the title role in Long John Silver. Between engagements, he returned to Australia to pursue a one-person show featuring a wide range of charac- ters — mainly Edna, whose popularity was fast developing. Ironically, although Humphries hasn't lived in Australia for decades, Dame Edna is now probably the most famous char- acter Down Under. Back in England, Humphries starred in Housewife Superstar! at London's Apollo Theatre --- and Edna took the city by storm and achieved damehood, a royal honor. He went on a world tour, appeared on network television specials in the United States and picked up a British Academy Award nomination for a film called The Dame Edna Experience. This led to the Broadway show and the current tour. Humphries' talents go far beyond the stage. He is one of Australia's best- known landscape painters and sculp- tors, and has written several books, novels, poetry and plays. - His autobiography, More, Please, won the J.R. Ackerley Prize for biogra- phy in 1993, and he is the subject of two biographical studies. He was given the Order of Australia in 1982, and received an honorary doctorate from Griffith University (Australia) in 1994. He is married to Lizzie Spender, the daughter of British poet Sir Stephen Spender. D Dame Edna: The Royal Tour comes to Detroit's Music Hall March 20- 25.
