represented the Michigan Coalition
for Responsible Gun Ownership.
The Coalition supports the pending
law, Alzady said, although the group is
concerned about "some of the areas
where properly licensed handgun own-
ers would not be able to carry their
weapons."
Newly named gun-free zones would
include places of worship, school
buildings and grounds, sports venues
and hospitals. Courtrooms are not
included on that list. Several years ago,
the Michigan Supreme Court ruled
that individual judges could ban
weapons in their courtrooms.
However, Gorcyca said, statutes such
as the CCW legislation supersede
court rulings. He
predicted that the
issue would need
further court
action.

Winston Churchill was perhaps the
most stirring, eloquent speaker of this
century. He also stuttered.
If you stutter, you should know about
Churchill. Because his life is proof that,
with the will to achieve, a speech im-
pediment is no impediment-.

Legislative Rumble

Each side in the discussion over CCW
law has its own set of studies and sta-
tistics. While such groups as the Jews
for the Preservation of Firearms
Ownership (JPFO) claim relaxed
CCW laws have reduced crime in
other states, others, including
Handgun Control Inc., say a better
national economy and fewer young
single men in the population caused
crime to fall throughout the country.
Steve Slater of West Bloomfield,
who supports the new law, said that he
also supports the goals of JPFO but is
not a member. "The liberals have done
a pretty good job of demonizing
firearms — and with some good rea-
sons," he said. "But now anyone who's
interested in guns is thought of as
being part of the lunatic fringe."
