U-/zblf;ted a‘t ,e2,/oefi a panel of students from Lahser and Andover high schools, discussing possi- ble solutions to interreligious tension. "People have a right to come to school and not expect anyone will attack their beliefs," said Waleed Brinjikji of Andover High. "School isn't for racist rallies. I come here for an education." Lahser High student Kathleen Birkhill said people should be able to express their views. "How else will they find out the truth?" she said. "But think before you speak." "People need to realize no one is immune to bias or prejudice," said Osman Abbassi of Andover High School. "In an ideal community, there would be toleration and understand- ing," said David Dworin of Andover. "Everyone would keep an open mind and a willingness to learn." Linda West is director of diversity programs at the National Coalition for Community and Justice, which coordi- nated the program. West said she was impressed with how promptly the dis- trict asked the NCCJ to help come up with ways to handle diversity problems. "I'm hopeful everybody learned something. I know I did," said William Rubenfaer, school board president. "I felt there was sincerity on all parts." Audience member Ira Mickelson summarized the evening's program with a reference to the days before the Jewish High Holiday of Yom Kippur, when all Jews ask anyone they have slighted in any way for forgiveness. "I'm asking each of you, when you go to school tomorrow, to go up to one of the kids you've had arguments with and say, 'I'm sorry."'
