who have slowly become my family.
But it is our tiyu/s, our trips
across Israel, that have connected
me to the rich past I never truly
knew existed.
Many of the great names and
famous rabbis were familiar. I proba-
bly learned about them at one time or
another in my religious education.
But here it has all come together.
In Israel — the nation where our
history took place, where our forefa-
thers walked and gave birth to a new
religion — I see for myself the blood
and the tears of our ancestors because
all of this is imbedded in the people
here, in the very earth on which I
walk.
I cannot describe the feeling of
knowing, for the first time, why Israel

Dr. Julius Barr is a husband, father and grandfather.
He also suffers from Alzheimer's Disease, which is
heartbreaking for his entire family. He's a participant
at the Dorothy and Peter Brown Jewish Community
Adult Day Care Program in Southfield and West
Bloomfield. There, Dr. Barr tells WWII Navy stories and
plays his violin for others. This makes his own life more
fufilling and helps demonstrate Jewish values at work.

I've been told this all my life, and I've
believed it, but it's much better to
believe in something when you know
why it's so. Now I know the value of
this incredible nation.
I know why lives were lost to pro-
tect this country. I know why innu-
merable battles were fought to ensure
our religious freedom, and to ensure
that Eretz Yisrael will be available to
all the generations to come.
At a precarious time, when bomb-
ings and threats from our Palestinian
neighbors bombard the Israeli nation,
I am glad to be caught in the middle
of this crucial period in our history. I
might play a small part in the mainte-
nance of our Jewish state, but I play a
part nonetheless.
It is an amazing thing to help to
shape the glorious history of a special
people.
