hose at all familiar with Rabbi Lawrence
Kushner (on this book he goes without the
title, but he is a graduate of the Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion) will
not be surprised to learn that this book is satu-
rated with political correctness (no "He"
here in reference to God). It also makes
use (though, mercifully, scant) of weath-
ered phrases that, on the surface, seem
to mean something, like, "God is wher-
ever we let God in," but on reflection
are pretty shallow.
That's the bad news.
Thegood news is that this book is wonderful.
Yes, wonderful.
One of the world's great authors, Charles Dickens,
proclaimed that the miracle of life is not that those of
us fortunate enough to be parents spend countless
hours and money and all our hearts and energy to
care for our children, but that "they, who are so
fresh from God, love us." Likely it is this closeness to
