oping to stern unease
among students regarding
the Mideast, the
Bloomfield Hills School
District will host two community
forums at Andover High School.
The forums are designed to help resi-
dents better understand the religious
diversity in the district and help parents
understand how to work with children
when they hear or witness an incident
of prejudice or bias, said Dr. Daniel
Krichbaum, executive director of the
National Conference for Community
and Justice, a Detroit-based human
relations agency that facilitates diversity
and conflict resolution.
Krichbaum said the forums were not
in response to reported incidents at the
district's Conant Elementary School on
West Quarton Road, where two Jewish
fifth-graders admitted bullying a fellow
fifth-grader of Muslim/Palestinian
descent late last year.
But a letter from the school board to
parents hinted at what prompted the
forum.
"Occasionally, incidents among stu-
dents still surface that serve to remind
us that there's more work to be done,"
the letter stated. "The physical, intel-
lectual and emotional safety of every-
one is essential to healthy growth and
development.
"The district cannot accomplish this
in isolation," the letter continued. "The
involvement of the entire community is
necessary if we hope to create an opti-
mal climate for student learning."
Krichbaum said, "We've done a lot
of work with Bloomfield Hills and
other school districts on religious
diversity. That incident may have got-
ten people to start thinking about this,
but the forum is not really a reaction
to it."
Barb Brown, the district's communi-
ty relations manager, said the forum is
"an opportunity for folks to come
together so they can increase their
knowledge and understand one anoth-
er's beliefs."
