history from Brandeis University and
has worked on the faculties of Clark
University, Wellesley College, the •
College of the Holy Cross and
Brandeis.
He became interested in East
European folklore and started investi-
gating the origins of Jewish humor —
the topic of his speaking engagements
around the country.
Waldoks also has worked on the
production of Jewish documentaries
shown on television, including The
World of Jewish Humor, Breaking the
Silence, A Taste of Hanukkah and A
Taste of Passover. He was a consultant
and actor for the feature film The
Imported Bridegroom.
The rabbi is very proud that his
congregation grew from 52 to 400
members in just a few years and
believes in the importance of reaching
out to people of different faiths.
He wants his new book to appeal to
all Jews and has included Purim plays,
poems, articles and text so that it can
be used at home and during services.
"I've done a lot of presentations in
Michigan," he says. "I spoke at the
book fair when my first book came
out in 1981 and when The Big Book of
New American Humor came out in
1990.
"My goal is to be involved in the
renewal of Judaism by creating a holis-
tic, encompassing and embracing
Judaism. I try to create enthusiastic
Jews and enthusiastic people. I do that
by making sure people don't confuse
solemnity with seriousness." Ili
