by reminding us of "our sacred task to
preserve the Creator's magnificent
handiwork and pursue justice for all
people and creatures."
COEJL, and the southeastern
Michigan chapter (SEMCOEJL),
understand the importance of the
three main avenues of corrective
change. They
embrace
principles set
out by the
originators of
Earth Day
more than 30
years ago.
In the
early '70s,
environmen-
talists
Mark Jacobs
implored us
to change our
lifestyle in three fundamental ways in
order to save our environment:
1) Stop polluting, and begin to
clean up the environment — "Reuse,
Reduce and Recycle."
2) Reduce consumption of fossil
fuels (oil and gas) and adopt more
energy-efficient means of producing
food and other basic requirements.
3) Stop eating meat, because by
far the greatest polluters of the
Earth were the industries involved
in raising animals for human con-
sumption.
Unless people returned to a plant-
based diet, all other efforts to protect
the environment would fail.
SEMCOEJL follows the third
principle by having only vegetarian
food at its meetings. Their Tu b'She
vat seder, co-sponsored by Jewish
Vegetarians of North America
{among other organizations), on
Feb. 11 at Adat Shalom Synagogue,
was vegetarian. Vegetarian and
cheeseless vegetarian pizza were
served at the event.
SEMCOEJL is further demonstrat-
ing a commitment to the third envi-
ronmental principle by joining Jewish
Vegetarians of North America on
March 18 at the Great American
Meatout. Two Jewish organizations
are combining efforts to promote veg-
etarianism and help the environment.
