Petition Seeks Limits
On Concealed Guns

In December 2000, a lame-duck
Michigan Legislature adopted Public Act
381, which requires county gun boards
to issue a license to carry a concealed
weapon to anyone 21 years old without a
criminal record, with limited exceptions.
Law enforcement agencies and
proponents of the law estimate that
there will be an additional 200,000
concealed weapons permits granted
under the law.
The Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit has joined a coali-
tion opposed to this law called "People
Who Care About Kids."
The group is trying to stop the law
from going into effect, pending a public

referendum, by launching a petition
drive that requires more than 200,000
signatures between now and mid-March.
The petition can be signed in the
council office. For more information,
contact:
wwvv.peoplevvhocareaboutkids.com or
call (248) 443-2543.
There will be a public forum for
the Jewish community on this issue,
sponsored by the National Council of
Jewish Women on Wednesday, Feb.
28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Birmingham
Temple. David Gorcyca, Oakland
County prosecutor, will be among the
panelists. For information, contact the
NCJW, (248) 355-3300.
