The most important of all, he says,
is a special liquid concoction he takes
everywhere in a small pouch — tinc-
ture of cayenne. This "liquid fire," as
he calls it, is made up of cayenne pep-
per, chili, jalapeno and habanero pep-
pers and African bird pepper powder.
Reuven says the liquid lowers fat and
cholesterol levels and softens the veins
and arteries.
He takes one dropperful three times
a day and he used it while climbing
Masada and during the marathon.
He also brought along his own
power drink, made of molasses, lemon
juice and his beloved liquid fire.
Last March, Reuven began an exer-
cise regimen, Which included walking
at the West Bloomfield Nature
Reserve, horseback riding, and kayak-
ing on the Clinton River. Later, when
he began training more seriously, he
also worked out at the Sports Club of
West Bloomfield.
"Every month, I felt I had more and
more power," he said.
He came up with the idea of going
for a world record climbing Masada
when he saw a program on television
about the Guinness Book of World
Records. When he climbed the desert
mountain in December, he was
equipped with a personal video camera,
fastened to his helmet, so he could film
his ascent with one camera as is required
by, the Guinness committee.
"Masada has always had a special
place in my heart. It is one of the most
special places in the world. I am a man
of the desert and I love the Judean
Desert. It is barren and only you, the
earth and God are present. It is a chal-
lenge between you and God," he said.
"Not only did Yair Ben Eliezer lead
the rebellion there [in the first centu-
ry], but here is Yair Reuven saying
there is another way of healing after a
heart operation."
During the rush of his climb,
Reuven managed to stop a moment
and watch as a herd of deer walked
by. It was, he said, simply beautiful.
At the top of the mountain, a
group of Israel Defense Forces soldiers
who were there for a special army cer-
emony greeted him with cheers and
applause. Reuven let out his own
cheer of "Yes!"
The average person takes about 45
minutes to climb the steep mountain
path, he said.
Though now his achievement has
to be reviewed by the Guinness com-
mittee, Reuven is not fazed.
"I proved to myself I have a new
heart. The doctors say it can't be, but I
proved it to myself and no one else."
