Opposite page: Michael East of Eastpointe (Randall McMurphy), Lisa DeWaele of Warren (Nurse Ratched) and Daniel Roth of Franklin (Billy Bibbitt) star in the Bonstelle Theatre production of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." 15 Mae Road FABULOUS FISH, PASTA AND VEGETARIAN DISHES wrote the book for the Tony Award- winning musical. "In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, we have a rebel, and in Man of La Mancha, we have a rebel against society. "I suppose it comes from deep within me. I have never identified with normal home life or a social or religious group," said Wasserman. "I think of myself as an outsider and quite often a rebel. My mother and father died when I was 12, and my family disintegrated. I was launched straight into the Great Depression and hit the road. For years, I rode freights and lived by whatever bits and pieces one manages. I know the interiors of a lot of jails." While the playwright built an educa- tion and career as a self-taught loner who chanced upon a theater job in California, Roth is launching a way of life ar the encouragement of his parents, Linda and Steven Roth of Franklin. "Being on stage is pure joy for me," he says. "It's completely different from public speaking. I memorize the actions as I read my lines, and the words just seem to flow with the movement." Roth, who has appeared in The Secret Garden at the Hilberry Theatre and Shakespeare's R and J at Wayne's Studio Theatre, currently is taking classes in directing, voice, movement and devel- opment of drama. Soon, he will be auditioning for summer stock work. Looking beyond graduation, Roth plans to stay in Michigan for a year, get his union card and move to Chicago or California. He thinks breaking into act- ing in New York would be too difficult. "I try to go to theater once a week," says Roth, who frequents the small ven- ues, such as Planet Ant in Hamtramck, to support other emerging actors. "With these smaller shows, cast members are dependent on words instead of spectacle. They're really fight- ing to give good performances, and they show a lust for the stage.
