gation's longer-serving members. "It's
just like family here," she says.
Like the proverbial wandering Jew,
the congregation has rented space at
many addresses, among them, the
Zionist Cultural Center in Southfield,
the Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit and the former
Congregation Beth Achim in
Southfield. They currently rent quar-
ters in a strip mall at Walnut Lake and
Drake roads in- West Bloomfield, but
have broken ground for a permanent
building of their own northwest of
Orchard Lake and Walnut Lake roads.
Members hope the new synagogue will
be completed within the year.

"The time is good to build," said
member Avie Benederet, who is a build- -
ing contractor. He concurred with others
that once the congregation has its own
building, it will draw more members.
Meanwhile, congregants hold classes
three times a week and a Shabbaton
once a month.
Shul president Eli Shalom noted
that the congregation is conducting a
search for a rabbi.
"This (the Torah dedication) is one
of the steps to building our syna-
gogue," he said. "It's exciting, like a
wedding."
The next step is to build a perma-
nent home. ❑
