Bob Gershman was honored Monday
by the Berkley Board of Education after
he was voted Oakland County Athletic
Director of the Year by his colleagues.
The board also cited Berkley's foot-
ball team and Berkley senior Oren

Maccabi Grant
Deadline Nears

The Detroit Maccabi Club has a
March 1 deadline for applications for
the Jay Robinson Memorial
Scholarship award.
The scholarship is open to any past
or current Maccabi athlete. A grant of
$1,000 will be given for either study
in Israel or participation in an orga-
nized national or international Jewish
event between June 1, 2001 and May
31, 2002.
Applications must include a one- or
two-page essay describing the Maccabi
experience and the effect on his/her life;
a personal profile, including name,
address, telephone, school now attend-
ing and year completed by June 2001.
Also needed are a transcript of grades;
two letters of recommendation from
non-relatives (teacher, rabbi, employer,
organization head, etc.); and specifics
about the program for which the award
will be used (dates, cost, curriculum,
sponsoring organization).
Information must be submitted by
March 1 to the Metropolitan Detroit
Maccabi Club, Scholarship Committee,
6943 Pebble Creek Woods Drive, West
Bloomfield, MI 48322.
The scholarship will be awarded
April 1.

Tryouts for 10 teams will be held in
March. Participants must be age 13-
16 by Aug. 1. The games will be held
in Monmouth, N.J., and in
Philadelphia Aug. 19-24.
Sports include baseball, girls softball,
basketball, soccer, girls volleyball, in-line
hockey, table tennis, bowling, chess,
dance, golf, gymnastics, racquetball,
swimming, tennis, and track and field.
A tryout schedule will be published
in the Jewish News.

Hockettes, repre-
sented the U.S.
Feb. 1-4 in
Rouen, France,
in the French

Cup competition.
The Hockettes beat elite teams
from Finland, France, Great Britain
and Switzerland to win the junior
division competition. The team exe-
cuted a near perfect performance on
the last day of competition to upset
the favored Finnish teams.
During competition, 20 team
members synchronize their move-
ments as they skate.
Katie and Shaina are members of
Temple Beth Emeth in Ann Arbor and
participated on the Ann Arbor team in
the JCC Maccabi Youth Games.

The Detroit Maccabi Club and the
Jewish Community Center have sched-
uled an athletes and/or parents meeting
4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4, for teens
interested in participating in the JCC
Maccabi Youth Games next August.
The meeting will be held in
Handleman Hall at the West
Bloomfield JCC.

at Northern Michigan's Crystal
Mountain Resort.
In NASTAR races, skiiers are given
handicaps based on their age and ski
against a time established by the U.S.
Ski Team.
Brad is in .fourth grade and Scott is
in second grade at Hillel Day School
of Metropolitan Detroit.
