E. Coughlin, whose anti-Semitic dia-
tribes struck a match of heated resent-
ment during Bernstein's teen years.
"Father Coughlin made a real Jew
out of me," he says. "My father and I
used to listen to him Sunday morn-
ings, and I couldn't believe his anti-
Jewish dialogues. I got so upset.
"He had a weekly newspaper called
Social Justice at the time. It sold for a
dime. But it was really social injustice.
That's what really got me into who I
am and what I am and instilled my
responsibilities of being a Jew."
That sense of responsibility manifest
itself in many ways after he became a
successful music promoter.
Bernstein rejoices in once presenting
Tony Bennett at Carnegie Hall, just
when Columbia Records had pulled
the plug on promoting his latest single,
"I Left My Heart in San Francisco."
He invited approximately 300 record
company employees to that concert,
after which the label put its confidence
back into the record and made it a hit.
Bernstein also discovered and
brought a band named the Young
Rascals to fame. They were talented,
professional and had a string of hits in
the late '60s that included "Good
Lovin'," "Groovin'" and "People Got
to Be Free." He managed the Blues
Project as well. Founded by Al
Kooper, it consisted of mostly Jewish
musicians; a few members went on to
form Blood, Sweat and Tears.
In his book, Bernstein relates a num-

ber of revealing stories about his celebri-
ty encounters, including those with Judy
Garland, Miles Davis, James Brown,
Michigan's Grand Funk Railroad, the
Rolling Stones, ABBA, Laura Branigan
and even the tartan-clad sensations of
the '70s, the Bay City Rollers.
Bernstein also recounts years of
strength and support from his now-
deceased best friend, Abe Margolies. A
high school peer who became a jewel-
er, Margolies loaned Bernstein the
$500 deposit he needed to present the
Beatles at Carnegie Hall.
It will be in his memory that
Bernstein plans to honor him with his
next dream — a star-studded music
concert for cancer research in Liverpool.
He feels the concert would be beshert,
like so many other blessings in his life
have been — especially his 37-year mar-
riage to his wife, Gerry, and the couple's
four sons and two daughters.
"I love music and I love people; that's
my H2O, so I can't walk away from
that," Bernstein says. "But my family
gives me such nachas, and if I'm blessed
to have grandchildren, I'm sure there
will be more coming. That would really
be a dream come true."
