rank Federico, a personal
trainer at the Jewish
Community Center's
Health Club in West
Bloomfield, is the type of person who
doesn't mind getting involved.
His willing-
ness to take
action in time of
trouble earned
him a
Heartsaver
Award from the
American Heart
Association. He
was honored in
a ceremony in
Detroit last
week, along with
four other
heroes who
came to the res-
cue of people
who had suffered sudden cardiac
arrest. And Federico did it three
times.
A personal trainer at the health
club for six years, the Waterford resi-
dent works out daily with eight to 10
clients, along with seven other train-
ers. In this type of activity, the trainer
always has to be alert and ready for
action.
Recently, an elderly man fell off an
exercise bike. Federico ran to the area
and began CPR while a doctor who
had been working out nearby per-
formed rescue breathing. Together, they
restored the man's pulse and the local
EMS transported him to a hospital.
A few years ago, Federico helped
pull a man out of the health club's
swimming pool and performed
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while
others did CPR on him. About a year
before that, Federico performed CPR
on a woman who collapsed during an
aerobics class, with the help of an off-
duty fireman who was working out
nearby.
"Unfortunately, the two men died
within months after these incidents,
but at least I helped revive them and
gave them a chance," said Federico,
who is married and the father of two
children. "I don't mind getting
involved and I would do it again in a
minute."
The American Heart Association
recognizes people like Federico for
"their willingness to take action in a
life-or-death situation."
The organization urges everyone
to learn the warning signs of heart
attack and cardiac arrest, call 911,

and give CPR until emergency help
arrives. More than 95 percent of peo-
ple who suffer sudden cardiac arrest
die before reaching the hospital,
which equates to almost 220,000
deaths annually.
Federico has assisted in several
other emergencies at the health club
over the years, often helping people
who feel faint after "overdoing it in
the whirlpool." He added: "I also
helped a diabetic woman who was
having an attack, and there have been
other minor incidents."
Certified as a personal trainer by
the American Exercise Council,
Federico has a degree in exercise sci-
ence from Oakland Community
College. He was nominated for the
Heartsaver Award by Keith Levick of
Farmington Hills, a volunteer with
the American Heart Association.
"The association is proud to recog-
nize our hometown heroes," said Dr.
Andrew Hauser, president of the
group's Metro Detroit Board of
Directors. "They are ordinary indi-
viduals who have truly done extraor-
dinary things. Learning how to give
CPR and use an automated external
defibrillator can arm people with the
tools necessary to become
Heartsavers."
