rights organization.
Victoria Keenan and her son, Jason,
were awarded $6.3 million after they
sued the Aryan Nations for negligence
after being shot at and assaulted by the
group's security guards near the com-
pound in 1998. Aryan Nations founder
Richard Butler, who sold the property
after declaring bankruptcy in October,
blamed a Jewish conspiracy for the out-
come of the Keenan's lawsuit.
The Southern Poverty Law Center,
an Alabama-based civil rights group
that represented the Keenans in their
lawsuit, lent them $95,000, the
required cash portion of the com-
pound's $250,000 purchase price.

New York/JTA — The Jewish commu-
nity in the South American nation of
Suriname is allowing one of the oldest
synagogues in the Western hemisphere
to be used as an Internet cafe.
"We had to do this to save the syna-
gogue," which is plagued by high
maintenance costs and low attendance,
Jewish community leader Dennis
Kopinsky told the Associated Press.
Kopinsky said the Sedekwe Shalom
congregation has only about 60 mem-
bers, and they now worship at the
other synagogue in Paramaribo,
Suriname's capital.

Property Crimes
Target Jews

Washington/JTA — The overwhelming
majority of hate crimes in 1999 directed at
property involved Jewish targets, according
to an FBI report on hate crimes.
There were 1,289 such attacks on
Jewish targets that year, said the
report. Blacks were the most frequent
victims of hate crimes against individ-
uals, according to the report.

Pollard Seeks
Sharon's Help

Jerusalem/JTA — Convicted spy
Jonathan Pollard called on Israeli Prime
Minister-elect Ariel Sharon to press
President Bush to grant him a pardon.
"You have it in your power to rectify a
great injustice in which Israel has been
complicit for 16 years," Pollard said in a
letter to Sharon. Pollard, a former U.S.
Navy intelligence analyst, is serving a
life sentence for spying for Israel.
