U.S. Green Card Amnesty

includes seven part-time teachers.
Most, including Weiland, also are
members of other academic depart-
ments.
A capital campaign, led by the
MSU Jewish Studies Advisory Board,
has raised more than $1.2 million
toward a $3.2 million campaign for
two endowed chairs in Jewish studies.
In addition, two other faculty
members are being recruited.
"We need at least that many for a
full department," Weiland said.
Other possible instructors for the
virtual university include Eli Yassif
and Rabbi Al Lewis.
Yassif, chair of the department of
Hebrew Life at Tel Aviv University
and author of The Hebrew Folktale,
will teach at MSU this summer.
Rabbi Lewis, rabbi emeritus at
Temple Emanu El in Grand Rapids,
has a doctorate in humane letters
from the Cincinnati-based Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion. He teaches contemporary
Judaism at Hope College in Holland.
Weiland said MSU is building on
the experience of others in designing
its Jewish studies virtual university.
Most likely, the on-line program
will combine Internet text and com-
munication with an as-yet-undeter-
mined requirement for face-to-face
learning.
"I am beginning to shift from the
things I saw as problems," Weiland
said, "and I am now seeing the
extraordinary potential of the virtual
university."

• The concluding paragraph in
last week's story on Birthright
Israel ("Still A Birthright," page
28) was incomplete. Richard
Joel, president of Hillel: The
Foundation for Jewish Campus
Life, said:
"We have limited resources and
are spreading them very thin by
devoting so much to Birthright. I
need something more than my
own kishkes telling me there's a
quantum added value by our
institution being involved as the
primary organizing force."

If Wall Street's unpredictability is taking its toll on your
investment portfolio and your peace of mind, maybe it's time to
consider a Certificate of Deposit at Franklin Bank. Our
