Zaft Medals
In Las Vegas
Leonard Brose of
Bloomfield Hills was
among the 1951
Michigan State
University tennis
team members hon-
ored last weekend.
The MSU athlet-
ic
department invit-
Leonard Brose
ed the team for a
50-year reunion.
The '51 team was MSU's only Big 10
tennis champions.
Brose led the team by winning the
conference singles and doubles cham-
pionships. He was also an NCAA
quarterfinalist.
In 1973, at age 46, he won the
National Seniors Tennis
Championship. He was inducted into
the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame in 1988, the same year he won
two silver medals for the U.S. at the
World Maccabiah Games in Israel.
MSU's 1951 champions were intro-
duced at Saturday's MSU-Louisiana
Lafayette tennis match and at
Sunday's Purdue-MSU basketball
game.
Danielle Zaft of West Bloomfield was
one of five local athletes from the
Gymnastic Training Center of Rochester
who medaled in their age group at a
recent meet in Las Vegas, Nev.
Zaft, age 11, won a bronze medal
in uneven bars at the Lady Luck
Invitational meet.

JCC Team
Nips Akiva
A layup attempt at the buzzer rattled
off the rim, preserving a 68-67 win
Jan. 25 for the Jewish Community
Center basketball team over Yeshivat
Akiva of Southfield.
The JCC built a 14 point lead in
the first quarter, but Akiva whittled
the lead to one point with seven sec-
onds to play. A strong JCC defense
helped prevent Michael Skoczylas'
last-second layup.
The JCC was led by Adam Hertz's
18 points and 10 rebounds. Jake
Kaufman added 15 points and Mike
Kaplan 12.
Akiva's Avi Beneson, a 6'2" junior
center and co-captain, led all scorers
with a school record 40 points, plus
20 rebounds. He was fed in the low
post by teammates Skoczyla (12
points), Ilia Yeverovich, Ron
Eisenberg and Elie Rothstein.
