Ultimately, the story of the making of
Dark Days is one of triumph.
At the Sundance Film Festival in
anuary 2000, Dark Days received the
Audience Award, Cinematography
Award and Freedom of Expression
Award in the documentary category
Singer, who is Jewish, doesn't consider
himself religious or identify strongly
with Judaism.
"It doesn't matter to me what [people]
are. They could be black, white,
Chinese, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist. I
don't care about that stuff," he says.
Singer's worldview is evident in his
perceptive film. It's an important story
about the tearing down of walls: the fig-
urative walls that divide and — as we see
in the film's surprising conclusion — the
literal ones, too.

December, Schnabel, described as a
mentsh with a voracious force of nature
in an Entertainment Weekly interview,
took the mike and muttered, "So, nu,
what's going on here?"
Despite his reputation as a name-
dropping pillar of New York's hip
downtown art scene, Schnabel was the
least pretentious person in the room.
He sat on the floor with his daughter,
Stella, to watch the movie.
Unlike a painting, a film is created by
cooperation and compromise, crafted
by many hands. Yet, Schnabel insists he
did not surrender the subjective singu-
larity of his vision to make this movie.
"I think I've shown that I can do
whatever I want with this movie," he
asserts. "Whether it fails or succeeds, I
never compromised my intentions." ❑
