The story of Haven does not stop with the individual refugees and their
families, the book written by Ruth Gruber as their champion or the minis-
eries broadcast by CBS. An organization based in New York is working on a
permanent museum with traveling exhibits, and the Web site
www.kidsnet.org is providing a study guide for youngsters in junior and sen
ior high schools.
Volunteers manning toll-free phone lines take pledges for museum dona-
tions and will be adding to their numbers during the days of the broadcast.
"We want to tell the story of the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter
[in Oswego] and holocausts in the world today," says Syracuse University
Professor Jim Schwarz, a volunteer director of Safe Haven Inc., a nonprofit
group of 450 members from all parts of the United States.
Currently, the organization operates an exhibit at the Oswego Head Start
building at Fort Ontario. Volunteers staff the exhibit and video display 1-4
p.m. Sundays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
The group is sponsoring the design and building of a museum in the for
mer administration building of the refugee shelter and planning travdino
displays for museums, schools and synagogues.
It is estimated that costs will reach almost $1 million to complete this
project, and funds are being sought from foundations and government
grants as well as individuals. Proceeds from Haven and fund-raising events
also support museum initiatives. The library will be named for Ruth Gruber,

Department of Interior and Ickes in
the northern reaches of Alaska, has
covered every major migration to
Israel for newspapers and ultimately
for books.
She was the only correspondent to
cover the 1947 voyage of the ship
Exodus, and her original source materi-
al was used for both the book and film
version of Leon Uris' novel. Her own
book Exodus 1947: The Ship That
Launched a Nation (Times Books;
$25) has just been republished with
101 of her own photographs.
Her 1991 autobiography, Ahead of

Time: My Early Years as a Foreign
Correspondent (Carroll & Graf; $14),
was reissued with a new introduction
and photographs this month. She ded-
icated her new, updated edition of
Haven to her four grandchildren. A
close observer of the making of the
film adaptation, she will have lots of
stories to tell them.
"I was fascinated by how each little
scene might be done 10 times,"
Gruber says. "In one scene, Natasha
Richardson and Anne Bancroft are at
the Pontiac Hotel, where I always
stayed [while visiting Oswego].
"Natasha hears Anne's voice, sees her
at the registration desk and hugs her

with such warmth and passion that
tears came to my eyes. I think there
were seven takes, and seven times tears
came to my eyes. Now, when I watch
a movie, I wonder how many takes
they did to get each little scene."
Gruber's friends have invited her to
their homes to view the miniseries
together. Some suggested a party.
Others wanted to join Gruber at her
Manhattan apartment.
She declined it all.
"I'll see it privately," says the woman
now on the talk-show circuit and in
the public eye for her courage in sav-
ing and celebrating so many lives. "I
just feel that if there are others
around, they'll be making comments,
and I would find that distracting.
"I want to watch the miniseries and
let it flow over me. I want to be able
to react all through the two hours each
night. I know it's not a documentary.
It's meant for entertainment, and I
will be entertained." ❑
