NG IN OUR itITURi Our Day Schools There is a special sense of nachas, or pride, that we feel when our children or grandchil- dren attend one of our community's day schools. These students get something extra from their hours at school: a compre- hensive understanding of what it means to be Jewish. Along with instruction in math, history and the language arts, as kids get everywhere, students in our Jewish day schools learn about Torah and commentaries. Because becoming computer literate is only part of a contemporary Jewish child's education — they need to become Jewishly literate. Your contribution to Federation's Annual Campaign provides scholarship support to' help educate 2,257 students in our local day school system. These fine schools run the gamut, including Akiva Hebrew Day School, Yeshivas Darchei Torah, Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit, Yeshiva Beth Yehudah Is c and Yeshiva Gedolah. Additionally, our new multi-stream Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit is receiving assistance from Federation as well. We're proud that so many day school graduates give back to our community and our people. We're proud that, through our Annual Campaign and our endowment efforts, Federation can help every child who wants one to get a Jewish day school education. When your child recites blessings in Hebrew for the first time, when your grandchild explains the reason for making up food baskets at Purim, this is Judaism in practice and deed. When students show they know what it means to be Jewish, all of us can feel nachas. And also proud of our Federation, for investing in Detroit's Jewish future. et ~ evc +, I on Visit us on the Web: www.thisisfederation.org 2/9 2001 119
