Wearing a Jews for Jesus T-shirt, he attempted to convince them that they, too, could feel the inner spiritual Judaic peace he experienced. If the group was shocked by his arrival, they were speechless when he left the room and returned in a suit, announcing he really was not a missionary but Rabbi Tovia Singer, national director of New York- based Outreach Judaism and the Orthodox rabbi they had come to hear. Relieved and stunned to see the rabbi, 50 people in Congregation Shaarey Zedek B'nai Israel's social hall SHELLI LIEBMAN had been certain they had just encountered a Jews for DORFMAN Jesus representative. For 45 minutes, they had listened Staff Writer as he described growing up in a Jewish home, attend- ing Hebrew school, and how, as a child, his grand- mother forbade him to even walk past a church. Now, as a Jew for Jesus, he talked of being a "complete, fulfilled Jew." Rabbi Singer, posing as a missionary, had allowed the group to bombard him with defensive and seemingly unanswer- able questions. They heard him respond with words he insisted were from the Tanach (Bible). While Rabbi Singer's role-playing pro- gram is usually presented to teens, as it was several times over the next few'days, on this evening he was hosted by Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Young Adult Division at a program attended largely by educated, professional adults. Many of them were convinced the Orthodox Rabbi Tovia "missionary's" quotes, later revealed to be Singer poses as a member fabrications and "vandalizations of text," for Jesus. of had been real. This made it all the more frightening when Rabbi Singer revealed these same methods are tried on the missionary's most targeted group — college students away from home. With Christian missionaries infiltrating schools and Jewish Internet chat rooms, the best defense, Rabbi Singer says, is an offense. "Give your children a Jewish education," he stresses. "Make certain they learn the truth and beauty of the Jewish faith." ❑ A GRAPEJEWZ GOOD MORNING, PHIL !Holi) ARE _You - rot? PtB?
