feel the land reclaiming me," says
Fitsell, who will show Evening Aspens,
a grid piece with a tree trunk as back-
ground and appliques of aspen leaves
in green, brown and yellow. Other
Its Between Me and the Trees
works
II and It Between Me and the Trees III
— are more abstract.
"This holiday with no special
prayers seemed to come from people,"
Fitsell says. "I was told about refer-
ences to the Bible, but I really want to
help viewers reattach to nature and
their environment. I believe that's
something needed in all of our lives.
The connection to nature transcends
all religions, I think, because we are all
attached to the earth."
Fitsell, who accepts periodic fiber art
teaching assignments and whose indi-
vidual wall hangings have been shown
in fiber art publications, maintains a
strong commitment to impressing
people that fiber art is not a craft and
hopes to communicate that when she
is in town for the exhibit opening.
The artist, who has stopped calling
her pieces "quilts" to move associations
from bed to wall, has a range from tra-
ditional to contemporary as she paints
on materials. She is enthusiastic about
the work for a 60-piece companion
show, "Soft Walls: More Work by
Colorado Fiber Artists," that also is
coming to West Bloomfield.
The non-thematic wall hangings
include Fitsell's horizon piece,
Complete, and her Native American-
influenced Pawnee.
Cohen will feature another Jewish-
themed piece, Nuremberg 22, for the
"Soft Walls" show.
"Nuremberg 22 was inspired by the
made-for-television movie about the
Nuremberg trials," Cohen says. "It is a
black-and-white piece with the color
removed to create a pattern."

"There are knowledgeable music lovers who will tell you
there is simply no pianist around today like Dubravka
Tomsic, and they are right." (Chicago Tribune)
—
In 1957, Artur Rubinstein said of the young Dubravka
Tomsic, "She is a perfect and marvelous pianist." Forty
years later, the New York Times called her performance
"the kind oc playing not heard since the days of her
great mentor, Artur Rubinstein." Having studied at
Juilliard as a child, :his brilliant Slovenian pianist was
reintroduced to American audiences after a 30-year
hiatus. She has since performed recitals on presti-
gious series throughout the country, and now makes
her long-awaited UMS debut!
