• In American Colonial days, fennel
I was popular as an appetite suppres-
sant. Men carried small bags of fen-
-1 nel seeds, perhaps with a bit of dill
I mixed in, to long meetings. Conse-
quently, they became known as
: "meeting seeds."
I • In Talmudic times, fennel seeds
I were a popular topping for bread.
I (placed on raw dough before cook-
1 ing).
1 • In Kate Greenaway's book The Lan-
guage of Flowers, fennel is said to
I represent strength.
How To Plant: Plant fennel from
seeds. Be certain to get the "sweet"
I variety (F vulgare dulce) rather than
the "wild" one.
Plant in well-drained, humus-rich soil.
Seeds should be 6 inches apart and
kept very moist. These will germinate
in the spring, after about twoweeks.
You must watch where you plant fen-
! nel, as it can adversely affect the taste
of nearby fruits and vegetables, espe-
cially tomato. All parts of the plant
may be eaten.

• Charlemagne introduced fennel to
!central Europe.
• One odd legend has it that snakes
ate fennel to restore their eyesight.
IThroughout history, the herb has been
praised for its ability to cure stomach
aches and stop a bad case of hic-
cups.

:qualities. You can use fennel seeds in
I a muslin bag, placed directly into
I your bath, to help you relax, or sew
into a sleep pillow.
