Harold Jaffa, recently appointed to the B'nai B'rith International Board of Governors, has been- chosen to be the recipient of the Bais Menachem Academy Chessed Award. The presen- tation will be made Monday, May 7, At the Ramada Inn, 17017 West Nine Mile Road, Southfield, during the Bais Menachem Academy's annual dinner. Previous recipients of the award include Hannan Lis, Neal Zalenko, Gilbert and Harold Jaffa Katie Borman, Elliot Pearlman and Dr. Arnold Zuroff. Jaffa was born in New York and raised in Brooklyn's Boro Park section. He graduated from the Hebrew Institute of Boro Park. During World War II, he volunteered for the Army Air Corp. as a navigator and flew 51 missions in the European Theater. After the war, he married Ellen, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and began a career with John Hancock Life Insurance Company. During the Korean War, he spent another 17 months in the Air Force. Afterwards, John Hancock trans- ferred him to Michigan to sell insur- ance to the self-employed. He was rewarded with a company manage- ment position over the entire state. In 1967, he became a certified financial planner and opened his own company. Jaffa has been a member of B'nai B'rith for 42 years, past president of the Harry B. Keidan Lodge and for- mer president of the B'nai B'rith Metropolitan Detroit Council. He has devoted 20 years to serving the Anti- Defamation League as a national com- missioner and is a supporter of the Jewish National Fund, the American Technion Society and other causes.
